Red Kite

(Milvus Milvus) A common bird throughout Great Britain up until the 16th century, when this fine bird was persecuted almost to extinction, leaving just a small colony of only 5 pairs in Central Wales. Red Marauder

Winner of the 2001 Martell Grand National. In one of the most bizarre runnings in the race's history, Red Marauder was first of just four horses to complete the course from a starting line-up of no less than forty, proving Reds have staying power - but you knew that already. Owner-trained by Norman Mason, Red Marauder was a 33-1 shot, jockeyed by Richard Guest, at 35 the oldest rider in the race.
